Polish Air Force

Wojciech Januszewicz was born on 30 April 1911 and served in the Polish Air Force.

During the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, he served with the 111 squadron of the Pursuit Brigade of the Polish Air Force. He shot down a Me110 and claimed 2 Ju8's.

He evacuated to Romania and later escaped to France. In May 1940, he joined the Dewoitine fighter squadron at Meaux.

After the collapse of France, he made his way to North Africa and then reached England via Gibraltar.

Wojciech joined the 303 Squadron at Northolt at its formation on 2 August 1940.

On 26 August 1940, his plane was damaged in combat over Southampton and he force-landed his Hurricane P3544 between Charity and Wyton Farms, near Fareham.

Taking off for a patrol operation on 5 October 1940 at 10:45, there were 150 enemy aircrafts crossing the coast at or near Lympne and spread fanwise through Kent.

 

A formation of 100 enemy fighters flew towards London, but only some ten penetrated the Inner Artillery Zone. A second formation of fifty enemy bombers remained near the Coast.

 

Flight Officer Wojciech Januszewicz's Hurricane P3892 RF-V was attacked by an Me 109s and was shot down over Stowting in Kent at around 12.00. His Hurricane P3892 crashed in flames at Stowting.

 

He is buried at Northwood Cemetery, Middlesex, Grave 231, and is remembered on the Polish Air Force Memorial at Northolt.
