Polish-Canadian writer and editor Irene Tomaszewska has had an extraordinary life. Born in a Russian gulag in 1940, she was 3 years old when her family arrived in a Polish refugee camp in Tengeru, Tanzania. As a child, she was fascinated by the African landscape that she grew up in. As an adult, she became an authority on its history.
