
Wladyslaw NAKIELNY

Wladyslaw was born in Ostrava, CSSR on 1 September 1922. On 1 September 1939, he volunteered for the Polish Army and fought in the September Campaign in Poland. He then evacuated to Romania where he was interned in a camp before escaping and making his way to France to join the Polish army that was reformed there.
When France fell, he evacuated to Great Britain where he joined the 1st Polish Armoured Division. He trained in Scotland and fought in the European Campaign from 1944-1945. With the 1st Polish Armoured Division, h was then part of the Allied occupation forces in Germany.
After he was demobbed, he studied Medicine in Switzerland, and there met and married his wife, Sylvia. They raised three children: Jan, Bronia, and Jadwiga.
In 1951, the family immigrated to Canada. Wladyslaw practiced family medicine in rural Manitoba. He studied psychiatry and practiced at the Selkirk Mental Hospital from 1964 until his retirement in 1995.
Wladyslaw had many interests: he loved music, playing his violin, singing with the Polish Sokal Choir, and performing with the hospital band. He loved nature, spoke many languages, and was greatly fond of aboriginal culture.
Wladyslaw passed away in Selkirk, Manitoba, on 28 July 2004, at the age of 82 years. He was buried at the Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg.
