Leon WANDYCZ

Leon Wandycz was born in Poland on April 20, 1909. He married Aniela Palaja and they lived in Buczały near Komarno, Poland.

Leon left for France just before WWII broke out to earn some money for a new house ... war found him still in France. His wife was left alone with 4 young children. The greatest misfortune happened when a piece of shrapnel hit Aniela very badly and the little children became orphans.

Leon served in the Polish Army in France in 1940. He then made a long journey through France, Spain, and Gibraltar, to Great Britain.

In Scotland, he joined the First Polish Armoured Division of General Maczek and served in the Podhalań Rifle Battalion. He fought through France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany in the European Campaign. From 1945 to 1947, he  spent in Germany as part of the occupying forces, before returning to Scotland.

Leon died in Scotland in 1967 at the age of 58 years and is buried at the cemetery in Brechin, Scotland.
