Kazimierz DUDA

1st Polish Armoured Division

Kazimierz was born in Dobieszowice, Poland, on 5 June 1911.

When WW2 broke out, he was called up from the Reserves. As 2nd Lieutenant, he fought in the September Campaign from 1 Sept 1939 to 22 Sept 1939. He then evacuated to Hungary where he was interned for 5 months.

He excaped from the internment camp and made his way to France where he served as 2nd Lieutenant under French Command from 19 Mar 1940 to 22 June 1940.

When France fell to the Germans, he evacuated to the UK and joined the 1st Polish Armoured Division in Scotland on 1 July 1940. He trained with the Division and then participated in the entire European Campaign (France, Belgiun, Holland, Germany) with the Division  (8 Aug 1944 to 2 May 1945) after which he served with the Occupation Forces in Germany until 8 July 1947. On 7 Sept 1944, he had been promoted to the rank of Captain.

On 9 July 1947, Kazimierz joined the Polish Resettlement Corps in the UK and was honourably discharged on 18 December 1948.

He was awarded the following medals:

  • Polish Cross of Valour in 1944

  • Polish Army Medal with Bar in 1946

  • British 1939-1945 Star

  • British France & Germany Star

  • British Defence Medal
