Jan SADOWSKI

Polish 2nd Corps

I was born in 1913 in Poland.

At the outbreak of war in 1939, I fought in the September Campaign and was wounded during fighting in Ciecanowie. After recovering, I evacuated to Hungary where I was interned. I soon escaped and made my way to the Middle East where I joined the 3rd Carpathian Brigade and took part in fighting at Tobruk, Gaza and Bardii.

After spending some time in Iraq, Palestine, and Egypt, I fought in the Italian campaign at Monte Cassino, Ossimo, Ancona and Bologna with the Polish 2nd Corps.

After the war, I came to the UK in 1946 with the rest of the Polish 2nd Corps and was sent to the Brandon Camp.

After demobilisation I joined the Polish Resettlement Corps and was allocated to the Marsworth Polish Hostel. After training for work my wife and I found employment at Vauxhall and bought a house in Dunstable.

I have been an active member of the Polish Ex-Combatants Association in the Luton/Dunstable Branch and in the local Polish community.

Jan passed away on 5 May 2012 at the age of 99 years.
