Zygmunt KOZLOWSKI

Polish 2nd Corps Cadet

Zygmunt Kozlowski was born on 8 September 1927 in Drobowaldy, Poland. During the war, he along with his mother and sister, were deported to Siberia by the Russins. After the Sikorski-Mayski Agreement in 1941 was signed, many survivors, including Zygmunt, were released and evacuated from the Soviet Union to Persia (now Iran). He attended the Young Soldiers Cadet School in Bashshit, Palestine. Although it was difficult being separated from his mother and sister, Zygmunt found his time in the Middle East as one of adventure and camaraderie. Those were times he reminisced throughout his life.

After the war, he returned to Poland, married Janina Pniewska and had a daughter Yolanda. In 1959 he, along with his mother Julia, sister Irene and brother-in-law Albin, he emigrated to Canada to join older brothers, Wladyslaw and Czeslaw. Janina and Yolanda followed in 1960. In 1962, second daughter Barbara was born.

In Canada, he and his brother Czeslaw operated European Jewellers until Czeslaw’s untimely death in 1987. Zygmunt created beautiful pieces that are cherished by his family, friends and customers. Zygmunt continued to freelance jewellery repair into his 80s. A tragic blow was experienced by Zygmunt when youngest daughter Barbara died at the age of 10 from cancer.

Zygmunt was an active member of Sokol #2 Polish Gymnastics Association and a longtime member of St. Andrews Bobola Roman Catholic Church. He was very proud of his daughter Yolanda and grand-children, Gabrielle and Eric and their
accomplishments.

Zygmunt passed away in Winnipeg on 14 September 2019 at the age of 92 years.
