Otto FEICHT

 

1st Polish Armoured Division

 Otto Feicht was born on 4 February 1919 in Opatowek, Poland.

 

When the war broke out in 1939, Otto was mobilized, and he fought in the September Campaign. He then evacuated to Rumania and made his way to France where he joined the Polish army that was reformed there. After the fall of France, he evacuated to the UK and made his way to Scotland where he joined the 1st Polish Armoured Division. After training and defending the Scottish coastline, Otto crossed to France with the Division and fought in the European Campaign from France to Germany. He remained in Germany with the occupation forces before settling in Breda.

 

He served as a Sergeant in the 9th Flanders Battalion of the 1st Polish Armoured Division.The battalion was called that because the Belgian Prince Charles gave it this honorary title in 1945. The name was assigned to the battalion because of their courage in fighting the Germans in Belgium.

 

The battalion was responsible for a nighttime attack in Ginneken, and for liberating the area around the current Maczekstraat and Wilhelmina Park. They crossed the bridge to the old center of Breda, where the population cheered.

 

Otto passed away on 4 September 2017 in Breda.
